First ERF auction results released

The first ERF auction has returned an average price of $13.95 per tonne of abatement. The auction was held on 15 and 16 April, and the results were released last Thursday by the Clean Energy Regulator.

Forty-three organisations placed successful bids in the auction for a total of 144 projects under a range of different methodologies including carbon farming, landfill gas and alternative waste treatment methods. The projects will deliver a total of 47,333,140 tonnes of abatement over the next ten years, with the average contract lasting 7 years.

The largest single contract was for 3,526,278 tonnes of abatement, while the smallest was for 12,000 tonnes.

Nearly a quarter of the $2.55 billion allocated to the ERF was awarded in the first auction: $660m.
